Dental Checkup Q & A

What Happens During a Dental Checkup?

Checkups will begin with a collection of medical and dental history. This can help the doctor identify any type of issue which might increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. For example, a person with diabetes is at a higher risk for gum disease and tooth decay. Patients will also have the chance to discuss any issues they are currently experiencing or any concern they may have. The physical exam will begin with a thorough assessment of the patient’s teeth and gums and will usually include a cleaning. X-rays may also be taken, especially if this is the first time the person is visiting the office. Each tooth will also be examined for any signs of decay or damage. An oral cancer screening is also available. Lastly, patients will be educated about any change in hygiene which is needed and what types of treatment they need, if any.

How Often Should I Go to the Dentist for a Checkup?

The American Dental Association recommends that people visit the dentist for a checkup and cleaning every six months.

What Can I Do to Keep my Teeth Healthy Between Checkups?

Between checkups it is very important that you brush and floss your teeth regularly. Use the techniques and products recommended to you by the dentist. Limiting sugary foods and beverages can also help especially since bacteria thrive off of sugars. To avoid staining it is also helpful to rinse after drinking or eating certain foods such as coffee and soda. When playing sports, wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth. Also wear a night guard if you are guilty of grinding your teeth while you sleep. Don’t use your teeth to pry off lids and avoid chewing on hard candy and ice.
