Orthodontics Q & A

What is Orthodontic Medicine?

Orthodontic treatments are designed to help correct issues of alignment, crowding, gaps, and crooked teeth. The procedures include items such as the installation of braces and Invisalign® aligners.

What is Done During an Orthodontic Exam and Consultation?

The orthodontic consultation will map out a plan for the patient’s expected orthodontic procedures. Customarily, x-rays are taken and sometime photos and 3D mapping. These help the doctor assess the needs of the patient and determine which type of orthodontic treatment will work the best for her or him. Usually the digital x-ray only takes a few moments to collect. To get a clear image, a soft plastic cheek refractor will be given to the patient. This lets the doctor get a good look at the placement of the teeth. There will also be an opportunity to ask the orthodontist any questions and discuss the treatment plan before it is agreed upon. It is recommended by the doctors that children receive an orthodontic consultation once they are seven and they may not receive treatment right away.

When Will My Treatment Begin?

If treatment is needed and the doctor and patient agree, treatment can begin once diagnostic work has been completed. During this phase the impressions of the patient’s teeth are made and the paperwork is all filled out. A fee is required for most diagnostic work and because of this, patients are allowed to take time between visits and the diagnostic visit can be scheduled for when the patient is ready.

When Will the Braces Be Applied or the Aligners Provided?

Once the diagnostic step is complete, an appointment will be scheduled for the application of the braces. Sometimes, braces can be applied during the same visit as the diagnostic appointment. If aligners are chosen, it can take approximately four weeks for the aligners to arrive. This is because they must be fabricated in a lab and then sent to the dentist’s office.
